Birth Registration Guide Nepal 2026
1. The Golden Rule: 35 Days
Free Registration: Birth registration is 100% free if completed within 35 days of the child's birth.
If you miss this window, you will have to pay a late fine (typically NPR 200–500) and may require additional witness verifications from your local ward.
2. Required Documents
- Birth Certificate from Hospital: The "Discharge Paper" or birth record provided by the hospital/clinic.
- Parents' Citizenship: Original and photocopies of both father's and mother's citizenship.
- Marriage Certificate: Original marriage registration certificate of the parents.
- National ID (NIN): In 2026, the father’s or mother’s National ID Number is mandatory to link the child's record.
- Witness: One family member or neighbor (over 18) with their citizenship ID.
3. Online Pre-Enrollment Process
- Step 1: Digital Entry: Visit the DoNIDCR Vital Registration Portal and select "Birth Registration".
- Step 2: Fill Details: Enter the child’s name, birth time, and parent details. Ensure the name spelling matches what you intend for school records.
- Step 3: Generate Token: After submission, you will receive a Token Number via SMS.
- Step 4: Ward Verification: The "Suchak" (Informant, usually the father or mother) must visit the Ward Office with the Token Number and original documents within 30 days of generating the token.
4. Special Cases
| Scenario | Required Action |
|---|---|
| Birth Abroad | Register at the nearest Nepali Embassy. You'll need the foreign hospital's birth record (attested). |
| Single Mother | Can register using mother's citizenship; a police report or self-declaration may be required if the father is unidentified. |
| Home Birth | Requires a recommendation from the Ward Member and a witness who was present during birth. |
5. Importance of the 11-Digit Birth ID
The certificate issued in 2026 contains an 11-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). This number is permanent and will eventually become the child's National ID Number when they turn 16. It is required for:
- School Enrollment.
- Obtaining a Child Passport (Minor Passport).
- Opening a Minor Bank Account.
