Nepal E-Passport Renewal Guide 2026
1. When to Renew
You can apply for a passport renewal if your current passport has less than one year of validity remaining or if all the visa pages are full. If you still hold an old Machine Readable Passport (MRP), you must upgrade to the 2nd Gen E-Passport during this renewal.
2. Mandatory Requirement: The NIN
As of 2026, a National Identity Number (NIN) is mandatory for all passport renewals within Nepal for applicants aged 16 to 67. If you are renewing from a Nepali Embassy abroad, the NIN is highly recommended but check specific mission guidelines as some still allow renewal with just a Citizenship Certificate.
3. Required Documents
- Current Passport: Original passport and a photocopy of the bio-data page (page 2 & 3).
- National ID Number (NIN): Enrollment slip or NID card.
- Original Citizenship Certificate: Required for verification (and a photocopy).
- Marriage Certificate: Only if your surname has changed or you wish to add your spouse's name.
- Pre-enrollment Form: Printed copy of the form generated from the e-passport portal.
4. Renewal Steps
- Step 1: Online Pre-enrollment: Visit the E-Passport Portal and select "Renewal".
- Step 2: Upload Scans: You must upload clear JPEG/PNG scans (under 300KB) of your citizenship and old passport's bio-page.
- Step 3: Book Appointment: Choose your DAO or the Department of Passports (Tripureshwor). Tip: New slots typically open at 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM Nepal Time.
- Step 4: Payment: Pay the fee via ConnectIPS or at the designated bank counter during your appointment.
- Step 5: Biometrics & Submission: Visit the center with your old passport. Your old passport will be cancelled and returned to you.

6. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will my old visas be lost when I renew?
A: No. Your old passport will be "cancelled" (usually by clipping a corner or stamping), but all valid visas inside remain legally valid. You must carry both passports when traveling.
Q: Can I change my address during renewal?
A: Your passport address must match your NID/Citizenship. To change it, you must first update your NID details (requires a Migration Certificate).
