Driving License Smart Card Delay & Digital Validity 2026
1. Current Status (March 2026)
Due to a massive backlog and supply chain issues with smart card chips, the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) currently has a printing delay of 12 to 18 months for standard applicants. However, new high-capacity mass printers are being integrated to clear the 1.4 million card backlog by late 2026.
2. Legal Digital Alternative: Nagarik App
- How to use: Open Nagarik App > Click 'Driving License' > Link your License Number.
- Validity: The QR code is real-time and valid for all road-side checks across Nepal.
3. Emergency Smart Card Printing
If you are traveling abroad for study (NOC), work (Visa), or a Peace Mission, you can skip the queue and get your card in 3–7 days.
- Required Documents: Valid Visa, Plane Ticket, Passport, and the Payment Receipt (Pink/White slip).
- Process: Visit the DoTM office at Minbhawan, Kathmandu, or apply via the "Smart Card Fast Printing" section in the Online License Portal.
4. How to Check Your Print Status
Don't visit the office until you confirm your card is ready. Use these two methods:
Method 1: SMS (Cost: NPR 5)
Type LC <space> [License Number] and send to 33001.
Method 2: Online Portal
Visit dotm.gov.np and use the "License Print Status" search tool.
5. The Provisional (Paper) License
Until your smart card arrives, your Revenue Payment Receipt (with the QR code) acts as your provisional license.
Note: If your receipt is older than 1 year, you must visit the transport office to get it "renewed" or stamped to extend its validity.
